1st Prize – the kids are alright @ Birmingham NEC

It all started (for me at least) when Gavin Eddy business man, angel investor and all round good egg, asked me to help and advise a small group of talented 6th formers studying at Frome Community College. They had won the chance to exhibit their new product and business idea at Big Bang Fair 2015 hosted at the NEC, Birmingham in a 4 day extravaganza designed to showcase the talents of young scientists & engineers. We met on a handful of occasions and it soon became clear that the lads had some great ideas and a clear vision from the start. Having entertained over 75,000 visitors to the show, the lads were subjected to a Dragons’ Den style pitch process where their business was duly scrutinised by a panel of celebrity judges.

Jake Malley, Alex Osborne, and Gabriel Barnes were announced as 1st prize winners with their project – a 21st century plant monitoring system that can be controlled wirelessly via the internet to create a multitude of plant environments simultaneously. The lads picked up £1500 in prize money to re-invest into their business.

Gabriel said about the event,  “The National Science + Engineering Competition has taken me on an amazing journey. We always had our sights set on winning a big prize at The Big Bang Fair but it feels incredible to the winners of the intermediate category.”
